Hola from Monteverde,

Today we are in Monteverde (map).  It is a special type of a tropical forest called a cloud forest.  It is located 2000 meters above sea level.  cloud forest.jpg (89109 bytes)This morning when we woke up it was only 19 degrees Centigrade so we were much colder than we have been at our other stops.  We had to get up early so we could get into Monteverde National Reserve.  It is one of the most beautiful places that I have ever been.   Because it is so high and cold the moisture in the air forms clouds.  As we walked through the forest we walked in the clouds.  The trees are covered with plants that get moisture from the air.  They are called epiphytes.  I have attached a picture of the cloud forest for you to see.  If you look closely you will see the epiphytes. (To the right, click on the image to see it enlarged)

liverworts.jpg (79476 bytes)There is another kind of plant that I like a lot.  It is called a liverwort.  Something very special happened to us while we were in Monteverde.  We saw a bird that some say is the most beautiful bird in the world.  It is called a Quetzal (Live web-cam - HOT!).  We saw the male and the female and their nest.  The male is the most beautiful.  It is turquoise and has very long feathers for it’s tail.  I don’t have a picture that I can send to but I will try to get one for you later.

Tomorrow we leave Monteverde and go to the Central Pacific Coast to a place called Manual Antonio.  It has a National Park that was created mainly to protect the beach but it also has a forest.  I will write again soon to let you know of my adventures there.
