Testing for Nitrogen Lesson Plan

Objectives
Students will:
  • make general observations and collect qualitative data regarding the testing site
  • collect soil and water samples
  • conduct experiments

Materials
  • computers with internet access
  • copies of the Site Characterization Worksheet (.pdf)
  • copies of the Water and Soil Quality Worksheet (.pdf)
  • access to a water sampling location
  • water and soil sampling equipment

Assessment
Students should complete and submit the worksheets for the lesson.

Implementation Tips
Obtain the necessary equipment and testing kits corresponding to the water and soil sampling tests that your students will conduct. Make sure that you and your students are comfortable with the testing kits prior to the first "sampling experience". The better the comfort level, usually, the more accurate the results. Plan your trip to the water sampling site (i.e. river, stream, pond, lake, ocean etc.) and complete the sampling tests.

IMPORTANT: Many of the water sampling tests MUST be conducted at the water sampling site. If it is not possible to conduct a field trip with all of the students, complete the necessary tests at the water sampling site and bring extra water samples back to the classroom so students that other students can have first-hand experience using the testing equipment.

Check the schedule for the deadline of submission of data. It is important that all participants supply data for the required tests, therefore providing enough information for students to analyze.
