San
Antonio Elementary School
Dade City, Florida
Our first grade class worked in teams of 3-4 to observe our squares. We drew pictures of each item, made tally marks to record how many and then decided whether it was a plant, animal, or nonliving thing. Back in our classroom, we made graphs and compared our findings with each other. Each group later made a graph of the things found by another school in the project and then compared the two graphs. Here’s what we found…
Group 1
We compared our square with Pequenakonck Elementary School in North Salem, New York. We noticed that they had small rocks and we did not.
We also noticed that they saw flying ants. Something that was different about our squares was they had more animals in their square. We think that where they live might have more insects.
Group 2
We compared our square with Harold Sheppard School in Quebec, Canada. We noticed that they found beetles and we didn’t. We also noticed that they found paper in their square. Something that was different about our squares was that they found sand and we did not. We think that might be because our square was just not in a sandy spot, because there is lots of sand in Florida.
Group 3
We compared our square with Saratoga Independent School in Saratoga Springs, New York. We noticed that we saw a snake and they did not.
We also noticed that both of us saw ants. Something that was different about our squares was that we had a tree in our square. We think that where they live probably has trees too, but maybe there just wasn’t one in their square.
Group
We compared our square with The Sullivans School in Yokosuka, Japan. We noticed that both of us saw ants. We also noticed that they had spiders and we did not. Something that was different about our squares was they found bird eggs and they didn’t. We think that maybe there were not any birds living nearby their squares.
