How do I post a letter to the Discussion Area? (back to top)
  1. Click on the "Conference" that corresponds to the type of message you wish to post
    Example: Select the Letter of Introduction Conference if you want to post your " Letter of Introduction"
  2. Next, click on the "Post" link that appears at the TOP of the screen.  Several text boxes will load up in the right-hand frame of your screen.
  3. In the "Name" text box enter your name.   You can just use your first name if you do not wish to use your full name.
  4. In the "Email" text box enter in your full e-mail address. Check to make sure you enter in the correct address so that others can contact you directly if needed.  You will NOT be allowed to post a message if you do not include an e-mail address.
  5. In the "Topic" text box please enter a brief descriptive statement about the message you are posting
    Example: "Letter of Introduction from Stevens Middle School, Hoboken, NJ"
  6. Below the "header", you will see four check boxes.  You can just leave them as they appear or change them to meet your needs.
  7. In the large "Message" box type in your message. Once you have completed your message you can click on the "Post" button that appears to the RIGHT of the "Topic" text box.
  8. A new web page, titled "Message Preview" will load up. You can review your posting before it becomes public. If you find any mistakes that require correcting you can follow the instructions (To make changes, click on the "edit" button). Once you are ready to post your message, you can click the "Post" button again. You should now see the message you posted listed in the left-hand side of the screen.
How can I find a message? (back to top)
  1. Posted messages are listed in chronological order with the newest messages at the bottom. The subject of each message is blue and underlined which indicates that you can click on it.
  2. Some of the postings may have plus signs (+) to the left of the subject.  This indicates that someone has replied to this posting.  To see the replies (or thread), simply click on the plus sign (+) and the thread will expand to show all of the replies that were made.
  3. To read a message simply click on the subject line of the message. The contents of the message will appear in the right-hand side of the screen.
How can I reply to a message? (back to top)
  1. After reading a message you can reply to it by scrolling below the message to where it says "Reply to…" and clicking on it that text.
  2. Simply fill out the information in the same manner as when posting a message for the first time.
  3. When ready, click on the "Post" button that appears next to the "Topic" text box.
  4. Follow the same steps as when posting an original message.
Why can't I see my message in the Discussion Area? (back to top)
  • If you do not see your message you may need to click on the Refresh link located at the top of the screen. This will reload the page and display the new message you posted.
  • The posted messages are listed in chronological order.  You may need to scroll through several screens to find your message

What is meant by a "conference"? (back to top)
A conference is like  a room organized by subject area.  This helps participants find what they are looking for.
Why is there more than one "conference"? (back to top)
Each conference room is categorized by what should by what should be posted there.  There will be a total of four conferences present at the end of the project:
  1. Letters of Introduction (See instructions)
  2. General Discussion
  3. Language Arts Activities
  4. Final Reports (This conference will open up near the end of the project - See instructions)
Who monitors the Discussion Area? (back to top)
The Discussion Area is monitored daily by the project leader.  The Project Leader also has the ability to delete letters.
How can I make changes to a letter once I submit it? (back to top)
If you wish to make a change, your only option is to e-mail the project leader.  You should include your school name, topic, as well as the corrected information.
