Global Sun Temperature Project
May
2002 - FINAL REPORTS
Taylor Middle School, Warrenton, VA, USA, Grade 7, Pre-Algebra

We really enjoyed participating in the project. Thanks for setting up such a cool project.

  • To compare # of minutes of daylight and latitude, the spreadsheet and the scatter plot we created told a clear story. As the latitude gets greater, the # of minutes of daylight gets smaller. This is because the earth’s axis is at a slant to the sun’s rays.
  • For average temperature, the scatter plot was not as helpful. The spreadsheet seemed to tell the story better. As the latitudes gets nearer the equator the temperatures gets warmer. As the latitudes gets further away from the equator, the temperatures tended to get cooler.

What we learned:

  • Learned how to use Celsius temperature.
  • Longitude is divided into degrees and minutes.
  • Never knew we could know the number of minutes of day light before hand.
  • Learned about places on earth that were unfamiliar.

What we would do differently:

  • Spend more time learning about other schools.
  • Be certain to take temperatures at a constant time and in the shade.
