Final Report - December, 2002

Athena Elementary School (5th Grade), De Soto, MO, USA

We are Mrs. Gagnon's fifth grade class from Athena Elementary School in De Soto, Missouri. In our class, we all measured the temperature daily, but recorded the temperature that most of us found. We found the sunrise and sunset times on the internet.

We picked 10 schools to look at and graph. We used maps in our social studies books and in the encyclopedia to locate the places. Then we made our graphs. It was easy to see the relationship between the minutes of sunlight and latitude. In November, the farther south you go, the more minutes of sunlight you have. The relationship between latitude and temperature is not as clear. Mostly, the closer you are to the equator, the warmer you are, but we think that other things like living in the mountains (like Lima, Peru) or close to a big body of water like an ocean also may affect your temperature.
