Final Report: December, 2002

DePaolo Middle School, Southington, CT, USA

Dear Fellow Students,

We are students at DePaolo Middle School in Southington, Connecticut, U.S.A. We are sixth graders in Project Discover II.

We went outside and took the temperature with thermometers every day for five days. We took the temperature in the shade. To determine the average minutes of sunlight a day, we used newspapers and found out the sunrise and sunset, which helped us figure out the number of minutes. We then averaged the numbers together to get our answer. Most days it was fun, but one day we locked George outside on purpose. He thought he had to walk all the way around the school to get back in. That same day, a thermometer fell and broke. The, next day we locked Steven out in the courtyard.

Some areas of the earth get more sunlight because the earth is tilted and certain places don’t get as much heat. Some areas get more heat from the earth’s tilt, which gives unequal heating. We wrote our results down very sloppily and averaged the numbers.

For fun we took the temperature outside in the ten inch deep snow and it was 18 degrees Fahrenheit and 0 degrees Celsius. We got our feet wet, our hands frozen, and twenty minutes later, our hands were still cold.
