Final Report: December, 2002

Old Town Elementary, Third Grade, ME, USA

Dear Colleagues,

The third grade classes in Old Town and Milford, Maine, collected temperature and length of daylight data the week before Thanksgiving. Students from three different classes took turns making and recording the temperature measurements. The three classes averaged their numbers to get one set of numbers for the Old Town area. Old Town averaged 12.0 degrees Celsius and 578 minutes of sunlight for the week.

We predicted that it would get colder as you got closer to the North Pole. We also thought the amount of light would decrease. The graph of sunlight and temperature versus latitude was very interesting. The line for sunlight was smooth, while the temperature line was jagged. We have made some predictions for how this graph looks compared to the graph in the spring.

Thank you for a very good project.
