From: New Castle Elementary, New Castle, KY
We are New Castle Elementary School in New Castle (Henry County),
Kentucky; USA. Our latitude is 38 degrees North and 85 degrees West. We
are in the fifth grade, studying Math and Science.
Our teacher hung a thermometer from a tree and we went outside to check the temperature each day. We read the newspaper to see what time the sun rose and set each day, and then computed the daylight minutes. We found the averages/mean for the week in each area. We retrieved the data, then graphed the information. We analyzed the graph and decided that latitude really does have an effect on temperature and daylight minutes.
Conclusions: We found that the closer to the equator (lower the latitude), the hotter the temperature and the farther away from the equator, (higher latitude) resulted in a lower temperature. The same was true for daylight minutes, the closer to the equator the school was, the more daylight minutes they experienced; although this was also effected by the season the school was experiencing.
We learned to convert Fahrenheit temperatures to Celsius, how a line plot works and how to analyze the data it shows, and we learned quite a bit about several different schools around the world.
Thank you for this experience.
