III. Calculate the Average Minutes of Sunlight per Day
What was the average minutes of sunlight per day for the week?
604 minutes @ day
Our school is Saint James Middle School. We are a very small Catholic school with only 149 students. We have 30 students in our sixth grade class. Our school is located in Johnson city, NY at latitude 42.115N. The longitude is -75.959W. Elevation is 873 feet.
We recorded the temperature in Celsius each day using digital thermometers. We also collected sunlight data, recording the time of sunrise and sunset. Some areas of the earth receive more sunlight than others and are hotter because some are closer to the equator, which because of the tilt of the Earth receives more direct sunlight. We interpreted our results by writing them down in our learning logs and discussing them with our classmates. Using our data tables, we displayed the information on graphs which made it easier to understand.
During the project we found the temperature, and the number hours of sunlight, we also did the sun light angles. We have a large map downstairs in the main hallway. We used that map to find the longitude and latitude. also went down to measure latitude and longitude on the big map we measured the hours of sunlight by having different kids assigned to different days to figure it out. We found out that the average minutes of sunlight per a day is 604.
Something new that we learned was that the way that the sun shines on the Earth affects how much sunlight we get and the temperature each day. The sun’s angle, brightness, and the amount of space it covers at different times of day affect how warm that area gets each day. Some of us learned how to use a digital thermometer. We also learned how to locate places on a map using latitude and longitude. One thing we’d do differently next time would be exchanging more letters with more schools and learning more about the schools and the areas where they are located. We liked playing games to help us learn the skills we needed to use during the project. One of our favorites was Island Rescue. We liked locating places on maps and looking at the places around it.
This was a great project and we want to do it again in the spring.
