A. Create the Classic Combination Chart

1. Highlight / Select the Data:
Highlight / select all of the data which in the case of the example would be cells A2 - E14.

2. Start the "Chart Wizard":
With the data highlighted, start the "Chart Wizard" by selecting this icon or by using the file menu Insert > Chart.

3. Chart Wizard Step 1 of 4 - Select the "Line - Column on 2 Axes" chart:
To create a climatogram, you will need to select a chart that has both bar and lines graphs. With the Chart Wizard open, first select the Custom Types tab and then scroll the Chart type: using the scroll bar until you see the Line - Column on 2 Axes option. Once you see this option, select it and click Next >.

4. Chart Wizard Step 2 of 4 - Chart Source Data
Since the data was organized by columns, select the radio button for Columns and click Next >. Had the data been organized in rows as described above, Rows should be selected.

5. Chart Wizard Step 3 of 4 - Chart Options:
In the Chart Wizard Step 3 of 4 - Chart Options, it is highly recommended that you fill in the fields for the chart title, the X axis, and both Y axes as in the example below. You may notice that the preview graph does not display the precipitation along the left axis and the temperature data is displayed in both bar and line graphs. Once you exit the Chart Wizard, you will have the opportunity to change the way the data is displayed. After you enter the titles, click Next > or Finish.

6. Confirm your Graph:
Your graph at this time should look something like the graph below. Note that when the graph is selected, all of the variables are highlighted in different colors.

B. Adjust the Chart Types & Axes

1. Adjusting the Chart Types - Step 1 of 2:
Now, you will adjust the Chart Types so that the precipitation is displayed as a bar graph and the High, Low, and Mean temperature data are displayed as line graphs. First, select one of the two bar graphs displaying the temperature (Avg. High in the example below) and right-click once it's selected. Select Chart Type... from the options.

2. Adjusting the Chart Types - Step 2 of 2:
Since we selected one of the two bar graphs displaying the temperature (Avg. High in the example), we're going to change the chart type to a Line graph. Select Line from the list of Chart types and click OK. Repeat the above two steps with the other bar graph displaying the temperature. Once both are completed, select the Average Precipitation line graph and repeat the above steps only this time you will change it to a Column graph.

3. Changing the Axis:
First, you should confirm that your graph looks like the one below. If not, it may be useful to either undo the last few steps or start from an earlier point again. Once you've reached this point, the only last 'required' step is to change the axes so that the precipitation is graphed on the left, or Primary Y axis and the temperatures are graphed on the right, or Secondary axis. To change the axis, the Average Precipitation data points as in the graph below and right click. Select Format Data Series...

4. Changing the Axis - Precipitation:
Select the second tab, Axis, and the click Primary axis under Plot series on as in the example below.

5. Changing the Axis - Temperature:
Now we have to change/verify that all of the temperature line graphs are plotted along the right / Secondary Y axis. Repeat the last two steps only this time select one of the temperature data series, click the Axis tab, and click Secondary axis under Plot series on as in the example below. Repeat for each of the three temperature line graphs.

C. A Climatogram for Rio de Janeiro

1. Finished: Confirm your Graph:
Once all of the axis adjustments have been made, the finished Climatogram should look something like this:

2. Last Minute Touches:
Once you've completed the Climatogram, change the colors and weights of each of the line and bar graphs, add gridlines, etc. as in the graph below:
